Many people asked me a same question: “what is the best keyword density for a web page?”. Throughout my whole SEO/SEM carrier I’ve seen a lot of top ranking sites had a keyword density which ranges from 2% to 5%. During my recent analysis, I found one website ranked #1 for a popular keyword and the site had a keyword density of 0 (zero). The keyword was not used even a single time on the page. I know this is so frustrated. You guys might be thinking how this could be? Well, I’m damn sure they got #1 ranking because the sites back linking to it used that keyword in their links.

I would suggest lowering your keyword density if it is over 5%. And remember to count singular and plural versions as the same word as Google has changed their search techniques.

Whether you call them keywords, indexes or cross references, keywording is not so much for data entry as it is for searching later on. The words that you attach to an image play a crucial role in finding the right images when conducting searches. Omitted words may prevent the most appropriate images from being found.

A good keywording system takes time and thought and can not be constructed in haphazard fashion with expectations of great results. If you create and apply keywords well, the result is faster, more fruitful file searches.

Keywording systems fall into either one of two styles.

Most commonly used, although not always the best, is the open vocabulary. If you look at an image and use whatever words it inspires for the keywords, you’re using an open vocabulary. One day you may keyword an image as Ship, Harbor. Entered on another day, you might have keyworded the very same image as Boat, Port. Another time you might use Watercraft and Harbour.

When searching for this sort of image, who knows what you’ll find or overlook because of inconsistencies in an open vocabulary. Of course, you can look for all entries that contain Harbor or Port or Anchorage or Boat or Ship or Vessel, but it’s hit or miss proposition that requires a vast patience or a good memory. If you find no entry for Boat, you must keep looking, trying other words in your keywords. When you discover Ship, you move on, never discovering all the others that got listed as Watercraft.

In a controlled vocabulary your keywords are limited to a specific set of words. Ideally this list of words is printed in an index or available on a computer for your reference as you apply keywords to images.

As you make entries in your controlled vocabulary system, you should have the option to add a new keyword. If you fail to find a satisfactory keyword for an image, add a new one to fill the hole. This way the keywords build slowly and thoughtfully as need arises. You are spared the monstrous task of building an entire keywording system before you know what you might need.

One long list of all of your keywords makes the task of locating and applying them impossible. Within your keyword index, you’re going to want levels of keywords; categories and sub-categories. Use the primary categories to quickly make significant distinctions within the subject matter. Use sub-categories to make quick breakdowns within the category and add additional sub-categories as needed, but don’t get carried away. Generally three or four levels are as far as you should go. A good breakdown makes it easier to add keywords efficiently and makes the searching easier too.

Suppose your files have lots of animal images. Start with a general category, Animals or Nature or Wildlife. Now, let’s say you have lots of bears among your animals. Try a sub-category, Bears. Use yet another level for details to get down to the fine points, Brown, Grizzly, Kodiak, Polar… and so on. These details are hardly suitable for any other category or sub-category.

A category, Birds, could have sub-categories of types of birds, maybe Eagle is one. details for Eagle might be Bald, Golden and haliaeetus leucocephalus. If you’re tempted to include details like Flying, Egg, Hunting and such, remember, these details apply to many birds. Flying, Egg, Hunting and such might serve better as sub-categories of Birds and not just Eagles.

Limiting the number of choices increases the accuracy of new entries and expedites searches but don’t be so extreme in avoiding new terms that you diminish coverage. A happy medium exists, but it’s up to you to decide where it is.

When keywording an image, look at it and think about what it really shows. What is significant in the image? Look for both the literal and the conceptual significance. A single image is likely to fit into multiple categories and sub-categories, so don’t think you need to apply one set of terms and that’s it. Most images contain a literal subject such as a dog playing in snow. Such an image would obviously earn keywords such as Dogs, Collie, Pets, Winter and Snow. Conceptual keywords for the same image might be Cold, Joy and Freedom. Resist keywording every object that happens to be in the shot; Door, Tree, Mailbox and so on unless they play a significant enough role that someone searching for those objects would really want to see this one too.

For efficiency, use the most basic, generic terms. Don’t use your keywords to show off your vocabulary skills. Your keywords should be kept to a level that is appropriate for your audience. If your images are for osteologists and paleantologists by all means use terms like zygomatic arch and optic foramen. Don’t expect the rest of the world to know what these terms mean though.

Reduce synonyms to the single most suitable word for a category or sub-category. This narrows rather than expands your search vocabulary list. For instance, here is a list of synonyms: precipitation, condensation, downpour, deluge, cloudburst, torrent, rainfall, shower, drizzle, sprinkle, monsoon, plus all their plurals. Rather than create a category, or even a sub-category for each and every one, use a broader term, such as Rain.

And finally, be sure of your spelling. Typos and spelling errors cause images to be missed in searches. Get it right in your master list and make sure to stay with it.

Good captions and keywords enhance the value of your images. An excellent image that never turns up in appropriate situations is a lost cause. Keywording is an important part of successfully bringing your images to market.

Researching The Triggers Of Google Penalities

From my experience, one of the best ways to learn about what gets a site penalized in Google, or any other search engine, is first hand knowledge. Because the search engines do not really want you to learn exactly how to rank sites, SEOs have had to learn from experience what works and what doesn’t. Research in this field involves treating the search engines as black boxes affecting an outcome – controlling the input, observing the output. The experiments carried out in the name of SEO involve trial and error – trying out many strategies – using control agents, repetition, and confirmation to choose strategies that consistently achieve positive outcomes. This experience also gains an understanding of what doesn’t work. And if you do enough research, and take enough risks, some of these failed experiments will also lead to an even more revealing result – the triggers of a Google penalty.
What You Learn By Getting Penalized In Google

Every SEO professional has experienced firsthand the outcomes of successful techniques that result in better ranks. And most have read the forums and the guidelines that point siteowners to the sanctioned techniques for pushing rank. And every ethical SEO knows there are consequences for ignoring those guidelines. But in spite of the great efforts made to avoid them, it’s the triggering of real Google penalties that are the most instructive, especially when they’re the consequence of rank boosting efforts. Clearly, the most in depth knowledge will be held by those few SEOs who have actual experience with sites getting penalized in Google, especially if they not only understand the reasons, but also strategize the unwinding. It’s one thing to read about penalties in the forums, and a completely different thing to cause them, and then have to deal with them. Being penalized in Google is something that happens, and not infrequently.

For more insights into Google penalties, consider these suggestions from their guidelines:

Avoid hidden text or hidden links.
Don’t employ cloaking or sneaky redirects.
Don’t send automated queries to Google.
Don’t load pages with irrelevant words.
Don’t create multiple pages, subdomains, or domains with substantially duplicate content.
Avoid “doorway” pages created just for search engines, or other “cookie cutter” approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content.

This is basically a list of “don’ts” whose existence proves their success. You’ll get penalized in Google if caught doing any of these things. But how do you think this list originated? Every single item on this list comes from a strategy that at one time could successfully push rank. My research proves that these techniques still can be used to achieve high ranks, it’s just that if you get caught doing it you get penalized in Google.

Is There Ever An Appropriate Use Of Black Hat SEO?

Because I work for clients who rely on natural search to drive their businesses, ethical considerations rule out taking risks that could get their sites penalized in Google. But the question is worthy of discussion, given the source of the standards, and our lack of influence in the arbitration and penalty process.

In the course of my work, I am constantly made aware of sites that successfully use unsanctioned rank boosting techniques, flaunting Google’s guidelines and still achieving stunning search results. While it is clearly in Google’s interest to be able to identify these sites, the truth is that the Googlebot is behind the curve in the techniques that can automatically detect sophisticated guideline abuse.

The more sites that rank successfully, while defying the standard of behavior set by Google, the more we need to consider the philosophy of search ethics. Think about this: black hat SEO is not against the law, it’s just counter to some rules made by some search engine. If your competition is outranking you, and he’s doing it with technical tricks that can’t be held to account, do you have the right to use the same (not illegal) techniques, even if you know Google would penalize you if they discover them? We all want Google to be fair. But the real world message, not heard by all those who worship Google, is that Google is not able to be fair. The techniques that trick the robots are no longer simple tricks like hiding text on a background of the same color (a trick that still can work, by the way). The tricks now involve higher level code, sites that dynamically serve static pages to targeted spiders, identify the Googlebot and directly manipulate it, hide huge numbers of text and links with CSS, and post virtually undetectable doorway pages and redirects. The task of regulating the behavior of technologically robust black hat SEOs is not small. The fact that I see sites that risk being penalized in Google, but are ranking with great success, suggests a problem that might not be going away.

How Efforts To Identify Spam Can Hurt Innocents

So we know that there are unsanctioned techniques being used on sites, and we know that Google is trying hard to identify them. But when you make the rules as well as enforce them, real justice can sometimes become invisible. If a site is penalized in Google, and the reason turns out to be technical and not an intentionally deceptive act, does Google have any responsibility to inform the site owner? I’ve seen sites lose rank because the Googlebot spidered the pages in a development area not intended for visitors. I once bought four related domain names, created sites and interlinked them extensively. They had unique content, but that didn’t matter. Until the interlinking was removed, these sites were penalized in Yahoo and suppressed in Google. Any brand new site receiving high level SEO will disappear into the Google sandbox until 6-8 months. In spite of the mythology spread on the forums, the sandbox is a real Google penalty, and I can site examples from my own sites.

The sandbox is one Google penalty that uniquely affects brand new sites. Google is terrified that a brilliant SEO is going to take a new site to the top of the SERPs and Google will be made complicit in the resulting scam. Just by requiring a trial period on the web, the chances of such a fraud being successful is decreased. And Google only sandboxes sites that garner lots of SEO – a site that shows no rank pushing effort will not receive this beginner’s Google penalty.

Some rather innocent sounding web strategies can trigger a Google penalty. Buying links, for example. This was a legitimate rank pushing technique not long ago that can now hurt your site. You can still find ads touting this strategy and link farms still exist. Owning lots of domains, each addressing a particular keyword set was once considered a brilliant move. I have clients who used this strategy successfully for a while. But when all those domains were identified to be part of one main enterprise, all those domains ceased being indexed. And the company’s main website suffered a manually imposed suppression across all their keyword sets, a kind of lesser Google penalty.

I’ve seen pages disappear from the Google index for no apparent reason. I believe that mistakes occur in their effort to filter spam out of the index. If your innocent site gets caught in such a filter and loses all rank, do you think justice will find you? It might if you make enough of the right kind of noise. But be warned: Google does not provide guidance when something like this occurs. A message through their form results in an automated message which claims the automated process fixes itself. Google claims to not make manual adjustments. Yet I know this statement is false. I have several examples of interventions by Google on both sides of the problem: manually penalizing, and manually releasing that penalty.

If You Think You’ve Been Penalized In Google

Sometimes sites disappear without being penalized in Google, and then come back at a later spidering. But if several big crawls have occured and your site is still out of the index, you must become proactive. More information is here.

If the reason you were penalized stems from unsanctioned SEO and intentionally deceptive techniques, you may not be able to regain the level of rank you once experienced without extensive work beyond the unwinding. But after cleaning up your site, you can still regain inclusion in the index, and can begin a program to build real relevance and structure that can support your ranks legitimately. Consider being penalized in Google as a wake up call.

The most frustrating cases involve sites penalized by Google for no apparent reason. An innocent site removed from the index by mistake, or for reasons beyond the understanding of the owner is a real victim of the search monopoly. If you feel this has happened to your site, don’t take it quietly, and don’t give up. A class action lawsuit may be in the best interest of everyone if it can hold Google more accountable for its errors. But for this to happen, you need to join with others similarly harmed. Tell us your story.

If you want experienced guidance, contact me with “Google Penalty” on the subject line. I answer every email, and will help you both identify the problem and strategize the restoration of your ranks.

How to get success on the web – SEs are not the only way

I have been researching around the years for better ways of attracting web visitors to a particular site and found many ways. Some of the rules we need to follow is keeping users trend in mind. Here is a simple rule to success on the web:

Make your site useful and then tell people about it. That’s not so complicated, really. Figure out how your site can be useful to people and then find as many ways as possible to let people know about it. You’ll use the search engines, of course, but you should be using other methods, too. Remember, the search engines are not the only way to get people to your site. In fact, many Web sites have succeeded without using the search engines as their primary method of attracting visitors to the site. It’s unlikely that search engines were a large factor in Amazon’s success — Amazon grew rapidly mainly because of the enormous press attention it received, beginning in 1994. Today, I’d bet that relatively few people arrive at Amazon.com through the search engines. Rather, they already know the Amazon brand and go straight to the site, or they go through the hundreds of thousands of Amazon affiliate sites.

Many successful companies have done little or nothing to promote themselves through the search engines, yet they still turn up at the top when you search for their products or services. Why? Because their other promotions have also helped to push them higher in the search engines, by creating thousands, even tens or hundreds of thousands, of links to them around the Internet. There have been different techniques moving around, but still experts are in a process of searching more ways to get success on the web. Like in 1994, people usually talk about link building, cool websites, etc. Similarly in year 2000 people were looking for unique and textual contents. I’d like to add here that the textual contents means the contents with full of information. And then communities picked up the local attraction, visitors more likely to visit communities based websites. But I’m still saying that content is a king, no matter it is unique but useful for an individual.

Lot of people want to know “What can I do to get higher listings
in the search engines”. Here are 3 tips I use that have never let
me down:

1. Keyword Research – This is big. Too many times people try to
get their sites to rank for one word searches like “cars”. This is
too hard to do and I wouldn’t even recommend trying it. Plus did
you know 2 and 3 keyword search terms almost always convert better
for you? So look for 2 or 3 keyword search terms like “used cars”
or “used car dealerships”. You’ll find it’s much easier to rank
for these. Another trick is to look at the number of pages Google
returns. If it shows over 30,000 pages it’s probably a hard search
term to rank for so I’d keep looking.

2. Keyword Location — Put a paragraph containing your keywords
towards the top of your page (or at least at the beginning of your
content) . Also put the keyword phrase in your title and meta
description. Don’t over stuff your page with the keyword phrase.
Overuse can hurt you here.

3. Number of Words on the Page – Keep this around 350 words. You
can still rank well for pages that don’t have this many words, but
remember the search engines love content and 350 words seems
to be the magic number.

So there it is. 3 quick tips that you can use to get better search
listings. You can also use the free article spinning tool to
re-purpose your content for more than one search phrase. Don’t try
to have one page rank for more than one search term. It’s much
easier to just create a new page specifically tailored to the
search term you researched in tip 1.

Web analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of internet data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage.
Web analytics is not just a tool for measuring website traffic but can be used as a tool for business research and market research. Web analytics applications can also help companies measure the results of traditional print advertising campaigns. It helps one to estimate how the traffic to the website changed after the launch of a new advertising campaign. Web analytics provides data on the number of visitors, page views, etc to gauge the traffic and popularity trends which helps doing the market research.

There are two categories of web analytics; off-site and on-site web analytics.

Off-site web analytics refers to web measurement and analysis regardless of whether you own or maintain a website. It includes the measurement of a website’s potential audience (opportunity), share of voice (visibility), and buzz (comments) that is happening on the Internet as a whole.

On-site web analytics measure a visitor’s journey once on your website. This includes its drivers and conversions; for example, which landing pages encourage people to make a purchase. On-site web analytics measures the performance of your website in a commercial context. This data is typically compared against key performance indicators for performance, and used to improve a web site or marketing campaign’s audience response.

Historically, web analytics has referred to on-site visitor measurement. However in recent years this has blurred, mainly because vendors are producing tools that span both categories.

Designing a Search Engine friendly website is never complicated, but needs enthusiasm and consistency, whereas communication between the graphic designer, content writer, webmaster and SEO analyst should be constant. In this article you’ll certainly get some new ideas and tips to make an affective search engine friendly website.
When we talk about search engine friendly website then you must keep in mind that the website should be both visually appealing to visitors and contextually appealing to search engines. If you only design a website which is search engine friendly can cause huge loss, as search engine deny artificial trapping and tracking. So the content and the design both should be natural and human friendly, too.

According to Bruce Clay, “Strategic Website development is the development of an integrated technical and marketing design that allow the website owner to realize their objectives for the website”

Basic Tips to Design a Search Engine Friendly Website

Some basic tips that needs to be implemented while designing and developing a search engine friendly website

Site should be both visually appealing to visitors and contextually appealing to the search engines. In other words creating a website that is easily navigable, visually appealing and gives your visitors what they are looking for, will encourage visitors to stay longer and come back often.

Don’t use grimy colors. Color patterns should be professional.
Use both left or right and top navigation. For contact details you can use footer as navigation.

Highlight the site objectives on your main page. What is site is about?

Do not put excessive stuff on your site main page. Use anchor links to navigate site external pages.

Never stuff your site pages with excessive keywords. Because search engine seriously taking this matter on their behalf and penalize your website for spamming.

Use at least 250 words as close to the top of your HTML code as possible. Within those 250 words of content, you need to make sure that you are using keywords in a manner that makes sense to a reader and will allow the search engines to see your site as a subject matter expert.

Use 60- 80 character in page title to navigate the search engine to index the page individually. Each page of the website should have its separate page title. This could help search engines to identify the pages individually.

Use 200 to 25 character in page description tag, this could help both visitors and search engines to see what your page is about?
Don’t use excessive anchor text link on the index page, use the links which are directly meeting to the internal site pages. PR factor is involved.

Use bold and italic around the main keywords, this could rank up your main keywords in a good search engine positions.

Use a combination of both extensive and targeted keywords words of your website. It is better to prepare a short list of words earlier that your site is trying to promote and/ or words about your industry. Always use the keywords properly.

Optimize the website for the targeted keywords before submitting your website to the search engines. (I’ll explain later each search engine needs and requirements).

Use Alt tags to validate your images and enable them visually appealing to the search engines.

Use correct English and grammar in the contents. Search engine always appreciate a proper grammatically correct and English written website.

Site Architecture

If you have done the basic SEO work, then its time to look at your website architect. What common mistake we often do while developing a website architect. While the keyword and some other basic SEO work are being done, your designer should be working on site templates and site architecture. Let’s make it wise and an open talk.

Direct your designer to develop a site template by using proper CSS, IRFRAMES, TABLES and some external JavaScript of any other script, which enables search engine spiders to crawl your site without getting bogged down with the html code. This course of action enables search engine to go the page and quickly set up what your site is about. This will resolve whether or not your get ranked.

Let your developer to create content to ensure that the pages that are going to be submitted grasp at least 250 words of unique and valuable content. This needs a proper communication between the designer and content developer.

Content developer should be operational closely with the SEO analyst to make sure that the keywords are being used correctly all the way through the pages of the website.

SEO analyst must read the site content one by one and check them carefully. Some times we often do a little mistake of not using H1, H2, and H3 header tags, etc. He or she should ensure that the links on the pages are working properly and are linking to the destination pages. We normally used to call this HTML validation process.

Site Optimization Tips

This excerpt from an interview with Laura Lippay, SEO Program Manager for Yahoo, is very much worth noting. If there were 3-5 site optimization tips you were to recommend to web masters, what would they be?

Usability comes before SEO – better yet, they should work hand in hand…

SEO isn’t just about H1 tags and title tags – more importantly, you need traffic…

You can listen to what everyone else preaches about what works for SEO or you can find out for yourself.

Conclusion

Designing a search engine friendly web site is not difficult, but it is time consuming. As long as you are prepared to be methodical; do careful keyword research; create unique, interesting, well-written content; and work closely with all the members of your team, you will be rewarded with high engine rankings and recognition in your field of expertise.
